Job Market Snapshot 📊

The Chaos: Tariff Standoff and Economic Jitters
These numbers are as current as we can get, but probably about 60 days in arrears. As of March 2025, for knowledge workers in management, professional, and related occupations, the unemployment rate is around 2.3%, compared to 2.2% a year ago. Specifically, for ages 25-34, the unemployment rate is 4.0%, and for 35-44, it's 3.2%. These figures suggest a resilient job market for skilled professionals, but tariffs and federal layoffs are going to make life a lot more challenging and already are.
Age Group | Unemployment Rate (Mar 2025) | Men | Women |
25-34 | 4.0% | 4.4% | 3.6% |
35-44 | 3.2% | 3.0% | 3.5% |

Trade Wars, Downsizing, and Automation Challenges
Tariffs: A Growing Concern
China is in the spotlight, but lest we forget, we have about 60 days to go on the three-month pause on all the “reciprocal” tariffs. By mid-May, businesses will need to restock, and retailers like Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT) have warned of empty shelves and rising prices. Experts predict major supply shortages and layoffs in sectors like trucking, logistics, and retail.. Economists predict job losses in the millions, particularly in retail and import-reliant sectors. This uncertainty is dampening hiring, making it critical to target resilient industries.
Federal Layoffs: Increased Competition
Mass layoffs across federal agencies, driven by the administration’s push to shrink government, have affected close to 300K workers so far in 2025. Agencies like the USDA, EPA, and Department of Education have seen significant cuts. Most of these people are experienced knowledge workers, which is intensifying competition for roles in tech, finance, and other fields.
AI Displacement: A Double-Edged Sword
AI is reshaping knowledge work by automating routine tasks like data entry and customer service. A Pew Research Report report showed 64% of U.S. adults say that over the next 20 years, AI will lead to fewer jobs in the U.S., while just 5% think it will lead to more jobs. While AI creates new roles in data science and AI management, it displaces others, increasing competition for non-automated positions. Upskilling in AI-related fields is essential to stay competitive.
